Privacy Policy

The Short Version

Motif is a local-first habit tracker. You do not need an account, and Motif does not operate a server that receives your habit data. The app does not include advertising, analytics, behavioral tracking, or AI processing.

Your habits and progress are stored on your device. Motif accesses or transfers that information only when you ask it to—for example, when you create a backup, export a CSV file, import a backup, or enable a local reminder.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy explains how Motif (the “App,” “Motif,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you use the Motif mobile application or web version.

This policy applies to Motif itself. Your device manufacturer, operating-system provider, app store, browser, backup provider, and any service you choose as an export destination handle information under their own terms and privacy policies.

2. Information Stored by Motif

Motif stores the information you enter and generate while using the App, which may include:

  • Habit names, descriptions, motivations, locations, icons, and colors.
  • Schedules, reminder choices, and reminder times.
  • Completion history, dates, statuses, and optional notes.
  • Automaticity check-in answers and calculated scores.
  • Habit stages, graduation status, and maintenance check-ins.
  • Reminder-independence test history.
  • Preferences such as week start, haptics, guidance tips, and onboarding status.
  • Local identifiers and timestamps needed to organize your records.

On iOS and Android, this information is stored in the App’s local database and local preference storage. In the web version, it is stored in your browser’s local storage system, such as IndexedDB. Motif does not upload this information to a developer-operated server.

Because habit names, notes, motivations, or locations are free-text fields, you control what personal or sensitive information you enter. You do not need to enter your legal name, email address, precise address, medical information, or any other identifying information to use Motif.

3. Information We Collect

We do not collect personal information or habit data from the App. In particular, Motif does not use:

  • User accounts or sign-in.
  • Developer-operated cloud storage or sync.
  • Advertising SDKs.
  • Analytics or telemetry SDKs.
  • Cross-app or cross-site tracking.
  • AI services.
  • Location, contacts, camera, microphone, health, or biometric data.

If a web version of Motif is made available, the hosting provider may automatically process limited technical information, such as an IP address, request time, browser type, and requested page, as needed to deliver and secure the website. Motif does not use that information to build advertising profiles or combine it with your locally stored habit data.

4. Device Permissions and Features

Motif uses a limited set of device capabilities.

Notifications and Exact Alarms

If you choose to enable reminders, Motif asks for notification permission and schedules notifications locally on your device. On supported Android versions, you may also choose to grant “Alarms & reminders” access for more exact timing. Reminder content and schedules are handled by the operating system; Motif does not send them through a developer-operated notification server.

You can disable notification permission in system settings or turn off reminders for an individual habit. Core habit tracking remains available without notification permission.

Files, Document Picker, and Sharing

When you choose to import a backup, Motif opens the system document picker so you can select a file. When you export a JSON backup or CSV history file, Motif creates the file in temporary app storage and opens the system share interface.

Motif sends the exported file only to the app, person, storage provider, or destination you select. Once shared, that destination’s privacy policy and security practices apply. Temporary export files may remain in the App’s cache until the operating system removes them.

Haptics and Vibration

If enabled, Motif uses your device’s haptic or vibration capability to provide interaction feedback. This does not disclose your habit data to us.

5. Backups and Exports

Motif provides user-initiated backup and export tools:

  • A JSON backup can contain habits, entries, automaticity checks, maintenance logs, reminder-independence tests, and selected preferences.
  • A CSV export can contain habit names and completion history, including optional notes.
  • Importing a Motif backup replaces the current local data and rebuilds local reminders.

Exported files may contain sensitive information. You are responsible for choosing a secure destination, controlling access to the files, and deleting copies you no longer need.

Motif does not provide its own cloud backup. However, your operating system, browser profile, device-transfer tool, or device backup service may back up the App or browser data depending on your device and account settings. Those backups are controlled by you and the relevant platform provider, not by Motif.

6. How Information Is Used

Information stored by Motif is processed on your device to provide the features you request, including:

  • Displaying today’s scheduled habits.
  • Recording completions, misses, skips, and notes.
  • Calculating consistency, recovery, automaticity, and formation stages.
  • Showing charts, history, reviews, and graduation readiness.
  • Scheduling local reminders and maintenance check-ins.
  • Creating or importing backups and exports.
  • Remembering your App preferences.

We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, data brokerage, or training AI models.
