Motif is a private, offline habit tracker designed to help you build lasting habits—not keep you checking boxes forever.
Start with a small, repeatable action. Choose the days that fit your life, add an optional reminder, and record each repetition in a tap. Motif turns that history into a clear view of your consistency, recovery, and growing automaticity, so you can see whether a behavior is becoming part of your routine.
There is no account to create, no cloud service to depend on, and no feed competing for your attention. Your habit data stays on your device, and the app works offline.
My Role
I am shaping the product strategy, UX and local-first application architecture. The central product decision is to help habits eventually leave the tracker, which affects the progress model, reminders, data design and the way success is communicated throughout the experience.
A Habit Tracker Built Around Progress, Not Perfection
Perfect streaks are fragile. Real routines have missed days, difficult weeks, and restarts.
Motif gives you a more useful picture. It tracks scheduled opportunities, completed repetitions, missed days, recent consistency, and how quickly you recover after a lapse. A missed day is information—not a reason to reset everything you have built.
Your progress view includes:
- A 12-week contribution chart.
- 28-day consistency.
- Total repetitions and missed days.
- Average recovery after a miss.
- Per-habit history and progress.
See When Repetition Starts Becoming Automatic
Consistency tells you that a habit happened. Automaticity helps show whether starting it is becoming easier and more natural.
After you have practiced a habit for a while, Motif offers brief automaticity check-ins. The four questions are based on the validated Self-Report Behavioural Automaticity Index. These reflections complement your completion history; they do not assume that every habit should form on the same timeline.
Motif combines repetition history, recent consistency, cue stability, and automaticity check-ins into simple formation stages:
- Starting.
- Building.
- Strengthening.
- Ready to graduate.
- Graduated.
These stages are guidance, not judgment. You remain in control of when to keep tracking, adjust a routine, pause it, or move on.
Graduate Habits From Daily Tracking
Most habit tracker apps are built to keep you tracking indefinitely. Motif has an exit.
When a habit feels reliable, you can graduate it into low-maintenance mode. Daily check-offs and reminders stop, while your history remains available. Motif checks in about a month later so you can confirm the routine is holding or restore daily support if it is slipping.
The goal is not a permanent streak. The goal is a habit you trust.
Flexible Enough for Real Life
Use Motif as a daily habit tracker, weekly routine tracker, or simple consistency tracker for habits such as:
- Exercise, walking, stretching, or mobility.
- Reading, journaling, meditation, or reflection.
- Studying, language learning, or creative practice.
- Sleep, hydration, and morning or evening routines.
Choose specific weekdays, personalize each habit, and set local reminders only when they help. Pause or archive a habit without losing its history. If your needs change, edit the schedule or restore a graduated habit at any time.
Private by Design
Habit data can reveal personal routines, goals, setbacks, and health-related choices. Motif treats that information as yours.
- No account or sign-in.
- No developer-operated cloud sync.
- No analytics or behavioral tracking.
- No advertising.
- No AI processing.
- No sale of personal data.
- Manual JSON backup and CSV history export.
- Full in-app deletion controls.
Motif stores your habits, entries, check-ins, preferences, and reminder schedule locally. Backups and exports are created only when you request them and are sent only to the destination you choose through your device’s share interface.
Make Repetition Useful
Motif helps you begin small, show up consistently, recover without shame, and recognize when a behavior no longer needs daily supervision.
Build the habit. Learn from the pattern. Graduate the tracker.
what it does
- Schedule habits on the weekdays that fit your life and add optional on-device reminders.
- Record completions, misses, skips, and optional notes in a tap.
- Review a 12-week contribution chart, 28-day consistency, total repetitions, missed days, and average recovery.
- Use four-question automaticity check-ins based on the Self-Report Behavioural Automaticity Index.
- Follow formation stages from Starting through Ready to graduate and Graduated.
- Create manual JSON backups, export CSV history, and restore local data without a Motif cloud account.
why it matters
- Progress is measured through consistency, recovery, repetition, and automaticity—not a fragile perfect streak.
- Brief automaticity check-ins help show whether starting a habit is becoming easier and more natural.
- Habit graduation moves reliable routines out of daily tracking and into low-maintenance check-ins.
- The local-first design works offline without an account, advertising, analytics, or AI processing.
privacy notes
- No account, sign-in, developer-operated cloud sync, advertising, analytics, or behavioral tracking.
- Habits, progress, preferences, and reminder schedules stay on the device.
- Local reminders are scheduled by the operating system rather than a developer-operated notification server.
- Backups and exports leave the device only when the user chooses a destination.
